Design an app that helps people improve their mental health

Problem

STEP 1  / SME interview, market analysis, secondary research, survey (59 responses), user interviews (8), affinity diagram, empathy map, user persona, user journey, problem statement

Recently, more and more people suffer from mental health issues aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic (isolation, loss of social connection). Our challenge was to use technology to help them improve their wellbeing.

Half of our survey respondents are in need of psychological support. The most frequently mentioned problems concerned:

stress, anxiety, life purpose
family, work, partner issues
depression and self-esteem

It turns out that they often feel that there is no one around to share their concerns with. Therefore, they feel compelled to go to the therapist to be heard.

Solution

STEP 2  / ideation, user flow, lo-fi prototype, concept testing, mid-fi prototype, usability testing, style guide, hi-fi prototype, desirability testing

Our solution is to create an app oriented towards a “both sides of the equation” approach: the user can get and/or offer psychological support.

online therapy services
empathetic peer-to-peer listening (peer-to-peer support has been proven to improve quality of life, engagement and satisfaction)
helping others (people volunteering regularly appear to experience higher levels of mental well-being)
meetups in person
confidentiality (the user has control over their information and conversation history)
a clear disclaimer that the peer-to-peer section of the app is not meant as a replacement for proper professional help
a link to resources for people in crisis
