Design an e-commerce platform for a local bookseller without compromising its values

Problem

STEP 1  / stakeholder interview, business analysis, secondary research, user interviews (5), affinity diagram, user persona, user journey, problem statement

The pandemic saw a rise in e-commerce for small businesses. In order not to fall behind the competition, Le Méandre, a Parisian bookstore, wants to improve its online presence, but without compromising its values.

Le Méandre indirectly competes with big players such as Amazon, Fnac, Gibert, Eyrolles or Paris Librairies. Their main strengths are the number of titles and convenience, but the smaller booksellers score higher in expertise (selection of books, professional advice) and ethical values (supporting the local economy, no polluting transport or packaging).

Indeed, readers prefer to look for books in local bookshops, where they get inspired and ask for advice. However, they often choose to shop online, even if they face several challenges:

no personalized advice
unreliable reviews
limitless options

Solution

STEP 2  / ideation, user flow, lo-fi prototype, concept testing, mid-fi prototype, usability testing, moodboard, style guide, hi-fi prototype

Le Méandre online bookstore is a click&collect platform that provides:

easy browsing
original categorization inspired by the bookstore owner
quick questionnaire about users’ tastes when entering the website
forum to exchange opinions with other readers
wish list that can be shared with friends or family

The typography and the minimalist black-and-white design refer to the tradition of printed books. The additional color palette is dictated by the color scheme of the book covers.
